Creating Tension in Your Playing: Introducing the b9 on the Dom7 Chord

You may have been using the Mixolydian scale over a Dominant 7 chord. If the Dom7 is a V7 chord, you may want to add tension by adding altered notes. (#5 b5 #9 b9) with the release of tension when resolving to the I chord. Let's just start by adding a b9. This is a borrowed chord from the Harmonic Minor Scale (look for previous lessons on this!)
