Why study harmonic minor? Well it contains interesting sounding chords not found in the major scale, primarily the V7b9 chord. After you've had some experience outlining a ii V I in a major key, you may want to consider altering a V7 chord for more color and tension. Instead of going through scores of Bach sonatas and Charlie Parker solos (which you should!), you can start by practicing this simplified lesson to get the V7b9 sound in your ear.
