Ok, so you know which scales to use over chords in improvising but why doesn't it sound musical? You're generally hitting the right notes, but are not digging in to the chord. Let's start with Guide Tones. Guide Tones are 3rds and 7ths of a chord and outline a chord better than any other. To build a line, start on the 3rd or 7th of the parallel scale used with the chord of the same root (i.e. G Mixolydian over G7). Start practicing this concept and you'll start to hear a noticeable difference in your lines!
