The "head" of the tune refers to the melody which is played at the beginning, or the "head" of the tune. There are a ton of blues heads and you'll want to learn a few for starters. Not only learning heads to tunes is needed for performance, but there's a lot to glean from them as well. You'll learn about phrasing, harmony, rhythm, and will have material for "licks".
