A chord is a combination of three or more pitches sounded simultaneously, and the building block for chords are triads. Triads are formed by adding every other note of the scale on a particular scale degree. For instance, if you're building a ii (two) triad in the key of C, start with the note D and then add notes F and A to it. Here, you get a Dm triad (D F A).
